IKEA - Coventry - GDM Partnership

As part of our framework agreement with IKEA we were appointed to design the building services installations for the new 360,000ft2 city centre store in Coventry; the first ëurbaní store for IKEA UK.  The store is split over 7 storeys setting it apart from all other previous IKEA stores.

We worked with the local planning authority to conform to the building regulations for carbon reduction. Whilst there were no opportunities for altering the orientation of the building due to planning constraints, we carried out evaluations on all feasible renewable technologies, and have designed an open loop ground source heating and cooling system.

The system comprises of two abstraction and two discharge wells sunk 200m into the ground, the ground source water is then harnessed to cool or heat the building via heat pumps. This technology provides heating and cooling for the entire store year round including partial water heating. Using this system we easily surpass the 10% on site renewable targets required by building regulations.
