We were appointed to design the Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health Services for the conversion of an existing listed greenhouse into a domestic residence. Compliance with Part L for this project was a challenge, especially with regard to mitigation of solar overheating.

Negotiations with the local Conservation Officer permitted the use of sections of opaque glazing to reduce the internal summer heat gains. Questions were raised by prospective buyers of the property relating internal comfort during the Summer. Through the use of IES software, thermal modelling allowed us to test combinations of natural ventilation, blinds, and underfloor cooling via an air source heat pump, and it was demonstrated that comfortable living conditions could be achieved.
